Dear readers,
As conventionally established and despite the increasingly alarming global pandemic, five years after the last issue of their guidelines the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) convened once again to review their recommendations on the imaging alternatives to colonoscopy to be adopted for screening or investigating a suspicion of colorectal cancer (CRC). Nine guideline statements have been developed that encompass relevant new evidence on the role of CT colonography (CTC) and the recently introduced colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) in this setting.
The specific topics addressed in these new guidelines, the main messages arising from them and the advances and differences compared to the previous recommendations are examined in depth by Prof. Laghi in this month’s review, which illustrates and comments on the use of CTC and CCE and their respective utility in specific scenarios, also in the light of the quality of the scientific evidence.
To enable a comprehensive knowledge of these new clinical indications, we also provide the full paper presenting the updated guidelines. Finally, we propose a selection of clinical cases from our archive illustrating the use of CTC as the most reliable imaging approach for colorectal cancer in daily clinical practice.
