Detection of pulmonary nodules with MDCT

Dear readers,

Technological advances in MDCT sensitivity have contributed significantly to the incidental identification of pulmonary nodules, an event frequently experienced by radiologists while performing MDCT scans. This diagnostic technique is also essential in the subsequent assessment and characterization of these lesions.

This month’s Focus on, by Dr. Anzidei, illustrates the steps to follow when a pulmonary nodule is incidentally discovered on an MDCT exam, and discusses the risk evaluation of these lesions according to patient characteristics and nodule features, based on clinical practice guidelines. Moreover, the selected scientific literature herein proposed describes recent technological systems that enhance the detection and evaluation capabilities of MDCT in the study of these lesions, whereas the two clinical cases present typical examples of the discovery of pulmonary nodules in real-life practice.
