Dear readers,

In recent years, technological advances have improved the resolution and, hence, accuracy of noninvasive imaging of the carotid arteries. In particular, CT angiography now permits the in vivo visualization of luminal narrowing, carotid plaque, and anatomical variations of the carotid wall and surrounding structures, without inconveniencing patients. Furthermore, CT angiography permits the precise measurement of the degree of carotid stenosis and the monitoring of variations in atherosclerotic plaque as a result of treatment. These features of CT angiography in the evaluation of carotid artery disease are described in Dr. Anzidei’s Focus on and in the selected e-book, both presented in this month’s newsletter. The practical application of this imaging technique in the study of carotid arteries is illustrated in an e-Lecture presented by Prof. Ertl-Wagner and in three clinical cases.
