Dear MDCT.net users,
Following on from last month’s topic of CT-guided biopsy of the chest, this newsletter
focuses on the abdominal organs and the use of CT guidance for biopsy in this body region. Although
ultrasonography has traditionally been used as the main imaging technique for this procedure, CT is
playing an increasingly important role in medical interventions such as biopsy for its ability to
assess anatomical sites precisely and to minimize complications. Differently from chest biopsy,
however, abdominal biopsy seems to benefit from the intravenous administration of contrast medium
to better identify lesions and to accurately differentiate them from structures to avoid. In the
new Focus on, Michele Anzidei (Rome, Italy) describes the technical aspects and clinical
indications for CT-guided biopsy of abdominal structures, specifically the liver, pancreas,
retroperitoneal space, kidneys, adrenal glands, lymph nodes and bone.
The selection of recently published research articles and chapters of e-books provides
additional information on the use of CT guidance in abdominal biopsy, while the clinical cases
included here highlight some real-life examples of this approach in clinical practice.
We remind you that suggestions for new topics to be covered in future issues are very
appreciated: for this purpose please contact us at
