Innovative approaches for radiation dose reduction

Dear readers,

One of the most widespread and challenging concerns regarding the use of computed tomography (CT) is the patient’s exposure to radiation. The radiology community has developed several strategies for minimizing this exposure and its possible health risks. One such strategy involves the use of contrast medium with a relatively high iodine concentration. This is the topic of this Newsletter. An article by Professor Saba examines this and other methods of radiation dose reduction. The research articles selected for you this month also examine radiation dose-lowering methods and the optimization of radiation dose in CT, while the e-book chapter emphasizes their application in cardiothoracic CT. Finally, three clinical cases selected from the archive illustrate these methods in practice, particularly highlighting the efficacy of the use of high-iodine-concentration contrast media.

Dose-reduction strategies in CT imaging

Since its introduction in clinical practice, computed tomography (CT) has been a useful and, nowadays, indispensable tool for diagnosis, surgical planning and follow-up of several medical conditions. The major limitations of CT are the use of intravenous iodinated contrast medium and the use of ionizing radiation. The identification of strategies that help reduce patients’ radiation exposure represents a fundamental area in CT research.
