Table of Contents»

This is one of the best books on MDCT that I have ever owned. The third edition of Multislice CT, recently published in January 2009, has been extensively revised. Hot topics, for example 320-slice CT systems (technology and clinical applications), flat-detector C-arm systems, and dual-energy CT, are described in depth. This book did not start as a "CT book" that evolved into an "MDCT book", but instead was designed from the beginning to serve as the reference MDCT book for both certified radiologists and radiologists in training.
Individual chapters on novel clinical applications, such as cardiac CT and CT brain perfusion, provide a wealth of up-to-date information and, in many cases, eliminate the need to buy additional books on specific CT topics. For example, for cardiac CT, eight chapters elaborate not only on standard aspects such as noninvasive coronary imaging, technical innovations in cardiac CT, the evaluation of coronary stents, acute chest pain, the role of CT in cardiac surgery, and new indications for cardiac CT, but also discuss the complimentary roles of CT and both MRI and myocardial perfusion SPECT. To illustrate the depth of information with another example, the ear-nose-throat section provides a specific chapter on dental CT focusing on the pathology of the teeth and jaws.
Despite the obvious excitement for MDCT, the concern for radiation exposure is present through the whole book. Dose is carefully discussed in dedicated chapters such as "Radiation dose in multislice cardiac CT" and "Radiation risks associated with CT screening procedures", and it is also always present in chapters on specific clinical applications, for example CT colonography and trauma.
The section on oncological MDCT contains chapters on clinically important topics such as hepatic, pancreatic, colorectal and urogenital tumors as well as additional chapters on oncological applications of PET-CT and early experiences with dual-energy CT in the abdomen.
The book offers useful chapters on interventional MDCT, including CT-guided biopsy and drainage, radiofrequency ablations, and other techniques; these topics are rarely discussed in other textbooks on MDCT. The section dedicated to the lung - a major domain of MDCT - focuses on interstitial lung disease, pneumonia, and CT of the airways. In these chapters - as in the others - many excellent figures illustrate typical CT findings which will serve as a clinical reference. Last, but not least, the book ends by covering trauma imaging and acute care, another area where MDCT has developed to become the gold standard in many institutions.
By combining up-to-date technical documentation with extensive clinical information and excellent figures, this book will become the standard reference on MDCT for many radiologists, including me.
