Radiology of the Stomach and Duodenum is a new volume of the Diagnostic Imaging subseries,
edited by Baert, Knauth and Sartor, and published within Springer's Medical Radiology book series.
Why is this book reviewed on MDCT.net, considering that it does not seem to be a "CT book"?
Generally speaking, radiology lost ground in the evaluation of the stomach and duodenum due
to the strong advances in endoscopy, especially in the 1980s and early 1990s. This holds true
especially for the field of conventional radiology of the stomach and duodenum. Nevertheless, the
concept of multimodality imaging has become established in the last couple of years, mainly fueled
by the multiplanar imaging options with high spatial resolution that can be achieved with MDCT.
This books covers in detail all aspects of radiology of the stomach and duodenum. The chapter
on conventional radiology may seem historic to some but, at the same time, it is only 21
(excellent) pages long. Compare this to the 16 pages of the chapter “CT of the stomach", the 20
pages dedicated to "multislice CT of the stomach", and last but not least 14 pages on "CT of the
duodenum". I have not encountered a more thorough review on technical as well as medical aspects of
CT imaging of the stomach and duodenum in any other textbook so far.
The specific value of this book is enhanced by the inclusion of clinically orientated
chapters, which complement the previously mentioned chapters on technical modalities. These
clinical chapters focus on entities such as the “acute stomach" and the "post-operative stomach and
duodenum". The latter is receiving increasing attention in many radiological departments.
Overall, this book offers both excellent content and excellent images regarding the
challenging field of CT imaging of the duodenum. I highly recommend it to everyone.
